Overnight Visits

Overnight Caregiver Visits

Overnight services are in-home visits from 8-12 hours long and may be ‘Asleep’ or ‘Awake’. They may start as late as 2200 and end as early as 0600.

For Asleep Overnights

the caregiver sleeps on site and wakes to assist with toileting, repositioning, reassurance and other overnight care needs.

  • Asleep Overnights have discounted billing for the sleeping period. Ten hour visits billed 6 hours, Twelve hour visits billed 8 hours.
  • Not all agencies provide Asleep Overnight rates. Some only provide Awake Overnights - billed hour for hour.
  • If the caregiver is unexpectedly required to remain awake with someone - commonly due to client illness or a ‘bad night’ - then hours are added in 2 hour increments up to hour for hour.

For Vigilant Overnights

the caregiver remains awake throughout the night to provide as needed care and to observe cues for support.

  • Vigilant Overnights are rarely necessary. This support is typically only needed for individuals with complex care needs who require ongoing observation and support tasks through the night and when requested for end-of-life vigils.
  • Vigilant Overnights are hourly visits that are billed hour for hour plus the complex premium for difficult to staff services.
Pro-tip: Asleep Overnight services are often for short periods during a transition or illness and infrequent ongoing because it’s unusual to have Overnight care needs without Daytime care needs. Once someone needs more than 12 hours per 24 hour period support it becomes more cost effective and better continuity of care transitioning to Live-in (Homestay) service.
