Reporting Adult Abuse & Neglect

Reporting Adult Abuse & Neglect

Abuse and Neglect can take many forms. Anyone with a concern about abuse and neglect can make a report to the Health Authority, the designated authority for investigation. Health Authorities are designated agencies under BC’s Adult Guardianship Act and must respond to and investigate reports of Abuse or Neglect. Reports can be made to the health authority or through the Seniors Abuse & Information Line and may be made anonymously. To report a concern for an individual receiving care services provided by the government: If no resolution is not found then there are escalations and appeals available: The Office of the Information & Privacy Commissioner (OIPC) is responsible for investigation of complaints into misuse and abuse of personal privacy, confidential information and other violations of BC’s Freedom Of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA).
Pro-tip:   One of the best ways to protect yourself from abuse and neglect is to have your Advance Care Plan, Medical Orders, Power of Attorney and Representation Agreements completed. Make sure you give your legal rights to someone who will "Do for you as you would do for yourself".
