Live-in Caregiver Visits (Homestay)
Live-in services are in-home visits that are 21 hours long with a 3 hour afternoon break. Caregivers sleep through the night and may stay for several days in a row before being replaced.Live-in services provide the best continuity of care possible
for high needs situations that require ongoing supervision and support. Stable Live-in service only requires a team of 3 caregivers, not including break coverage.
- Caregivers sleep on site and are available to assist with overnight care needs. Caregivers wake to assist with toileting, repositioning or reassurance
- Caregivers are present throughout the day to assist with care needs, maintain the home, do meal prep, laundry and other domestic tasks
- Caregivers have a 3 hour break during the Live-in visit. Some clients can be left alone, or have someone else stay with them or the agency can cover the break at the regular hourly cost
- Awake periods occur when the caregiver is unexpectedly required to remain awake during the sleep hours due to client illness or a ‘bad night’ - awake hours are added in two hour intervals up to hour-for-hour
- When the caregiver needs to be up repeatedly throughout the night Live-in is no longer sustainable and the service requires 24-Hour Support
Live-in and 24-Hour Support services are very different.
- Live-in services involve one caregiver remaining at the home for multiple days at a time before being replaced. 24-Hour services are multiple 8 or 12 hour shifts per day with caregivers rotating through the day and night.
- Live-in service requires a minimum team of 3 caregivers per week for stable service, not including break coverage. 24-Hour care requires a minimum team of 8-9 caregivers per week for stable service.
- 24-Hour care requires more caregivers to provide stable coverage and costs 150%-200% more than Live-in services. 24 Hour care is only used when Live-in service cannot be provided.
Pro-tip: Not all home care providers offer Live-in services. Some will quote a 24 Hour care rate when asked rather than say they don't provide Live-in.
